HISD acclimates to ‘different’ year

Hamilton Independent School District Board of Trustees Monday evening worked through a 13-item agenda in just 23 minutes.

The agenda was capped by a public hearing to discuss the 2020-21 proposed tax rate of $1.0546 per $100 valuation, a one-cent decrease from the previous year.

However, no one from the community attended the Zoom meeting to speak on the tax rate.

Courthouse windows to get makeover

Hamilton County Commissioners Tuesday morning approved a proposal to repair windows at the courthouse, a possible stop sign in Precinct 3, three new private roads in a subdivision in Precinct 2 and a proposed name change for Hamilton County Appraisal District.

Commissioners previously sought proposals for repair of the windows in the historic county courthouse, but the resulting estimates were prohibitive. Local contractor Don Rudolph will clean and prep, reglaze and paint the windows for a fraction of the previously proposed costs.

TSTC culinary arts students put to the baking test

(WACO, Texas) - Students in Texas State Technical College’s Advanced Pastry Shop class in Waco presented their sweetest treats as part of a final exam on Thursday.

Students spent two days this week making multiple desserts of their choice. Students also had to turn in a portfolio of all their work for the semester, including product pricing, plating diagrams, recipes and other information.

Students took the class this semester in a hybrid format, with labs being done in-person and lectures and quizzes done online, per TSTC’s COVID-19 teaching plan.

Lions honor Schrank

Hamilton Lions Club recognized Bert Schrank for 71 years of service last Wednesday.

“He is a blessing and has been for many years to this community,” said Lion Rodney Craddick. “He is a champion and we just love him to death.”

Heritage Days one week away

Hamilton County Heritage Days, sponsored by Lawson Implement, is only one week away.

For the first time ever, the three-day event will include a horseshoe tournament.

Ashmore Plumbing is sponsoring a double elimination style tournament limited to 32 teams next Saturday, Sept. 5 at Hamilton Fair Park.

“Bring your partner, your horseshoes, your chair and let’s have fun,” said Cody Ashmore.

Council OKs budgets, plans

Hamilton City Council last Thursday via Zoom worked with Hamilton Economic Development Corporation, Main Street Project and Hamilton Chamber of Commerce to approve resolutions of their new budgets and other details to tie up FY 2020.

EDC Executive Director Sarah Bauman presented the 2020-23 Strategic Plan for the EDC as well as budget amendments for 2019-20, FY 2020-21 budget, quarterly financials and proposed board members for the coming year.

Free cuts

Hamilton hairdressers Crystal Hayes, Leiah Terry and Andrea Fletcher spent their Sunday afternoon giving free back-to-school haircuts at Rejuvenation Station. The trio said they did about 30 cuts. 

Hound supper canceled for 2020

The Pecan Wells Hound Supper scheduled for Sept. 5 has been cancelled.

Hopefully they will be able to have it in 2021.
