Historic chairs returned to state capitol

While perusing an antique shop on the outskirts of Austin in 1995, Sue Gibson stumbled upon a couple of pieces of Texas history – a pair of chairs from the state capitol.

While some might have seen worn out old chairs, Sue saw beauty in the oak craftsmanship, unique daisy nails and even the dilapidated seats. She purchased them, had them reupholstered and lovingly cared for them for over 25 years.

Last week, she and husband Don loaded them in the back of a car for their return trip home to the Capitol.

Texas Heroes Day honors military past and present

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas will recognize Texas military heroes on September 18 with Texas Heroes Day. The DRT has designated the day to honor and preserve the memory of the volunteer soldiers who died defending the Republic of Texas and her independence, and to pay tribute to the men and women of the military, both past and present, who serve Texas. Special emphasis is placed on honoring those of the 1842 Dawson Massacre and Mier Expedition.

Commissioners affirm burn ban lift

Hamilton County commissioners court Tuesday morning ratified Judge Mark Tynes’ order Friday to lift the county burn ban.

Commissioners also accepted for filing plats from David Kilgore for a new subdivision to include 10-plus acres tracts and be named Mesa Verde Ranches. The subdivision will include no publicly maintained roadways.

Sale of several trust properties was approved by the court, and these will be returned to the tax rolls.

Recently, I received a very official-looking letter that was addressed to my neighbor. It was on the same street, just the wrong house number, so I decided to simply put it in their mailbox. However, I didn’t know this neighbor by name, and that’s when I discovered just how hard a postman’s job really is.

In the swampy woods of Tangipahoa Parish in Southeastern Louisiana is a tiny town called Loranger.

When I lived there as a teen, Loranger was home to one grocery store, a “malt stand,” two churches, a gas station, lots of good people and the mighty Loranger Wolves.

It still is home to one of our most loyal readers.

Mrs. Joyce Chambers will be 99 in November. Until a year or so ago, she volunteered at the hospital in nearby Hammond. She still drives. She had a son who played professional football. She is a tough little lady. And a sweet one.

Bosque Art Classic exhibit, sale online

The 35th Annual Bosque Art Classic in Clifton features over 200 pieces of outstanding art by artists from across the nation. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the exhibition and sale will be completely online this year, including the opening night “ceremony” which will take the form of a video premiere on Facebook on September 12 at 7 p.m.

Texans turned out in record numbers on Sep. 9, 1844 to pick a president for the fourth and final time. With independence about to be traded for statehood, voters took comfort in the fact that the winner would soon be out of a job.

To say 2020 has been a strange year would be an understatement. As COVID19 presents challenges in education, Friends of Hamilton ISD continues to meet the needs of Hamilton ISD while enriching educational opportunities for students.

“It is because of the generosity of our donors that we were able to meet many new special requests within the district,” stated FoHISD Executive Director Gayle Edwards.
