HISD Meet-the-Teacher

Hamilton ISD is hosting the Meet the Teacher Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 16-17. Pre-K, 1st , 2nd and 4th grades are invited on Monday from 5 to 6:30 p.m., 6th graders are welcome from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and high school students from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Kinder, 3rd and 5th graders can meet teachers from 5 to 6:30 p.m., 7th and 8th graders 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and high school 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The Hamilton Public Library will be offering a sneak peek of the new facility and grounds on Thursday, Aug. 19 and Friday, Aug. 20. Doors will open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each evening. The community is invited for a “Come and Go” Open House to see the beautiful new library! Masks are optional.

Dove Fest tradition continues

1972 was the year it all began, the first year of the Hamilton County Dove Festival and Fair.

Don Haile was the manager of the Chamber of Commerce, and Rev. George Gaston, festival chairman.

The event was three days long and took numerous committee chairman and members to organize.

The festival was chock-full of events and exhibits.

Events took place at the fairgrounds, where patrons enjoyed a rodeo and carnival.

One of the highlights from the children’s pet show was when the Venomaires demonstrated how to milk a rattlesnake.

Evant board: No man buns

Evant students can keep their nose piercings when school starts, but man buns and ponytails are out.

School trustees Monday evening reviewed student handbooks and code of conduct as well as budget and tax projections and back-to-school details.

Meet the Teacher will be Aug. 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and an open house is set for Sept. 27. School starts Aug. 18.

Principal Cheyenne Cook outlined proposed changes to the student handbook.

4-H Fun Day

Better Living for Texans

An eating plan that helps manage your weight includes a variety of healthy foods. Add an array of colors to your plate and think of it as eating the rainbow. Dark, leafy greens, oranges and tomatoes — even fresh herbs — are loaded with vitamins, fiber and minerals. Adding frozen peppers, broccoli or onions to stews and omelets gives them a quick and convenient boost of color and nutrients.

MYSTERY- Johnny Jones brought in this photo from a Hamilton High School 1961 yearbook last week. He and his friends have shown the photo to several folks and gotten very few answers as to who is pictured. The car club started in 1959 and disbanded in 1963 or 1964, then restarted for a few years in the late 1970s. A group that meets at the courthouse on Sunday evenings would like to start it up again, but would like to know the story behind it and this photograph. Where is this house? Who are these young men? Jones said the first group met in Alton Bullard’s garage just off the square. The second group met in an old city building. The first vehicle in the photo belonged to Billy Hamilton, who is pictured far left. The pickup belonged to Bobby Glen Guest, and the Studebaker to someone named Gromatzky. Also in the photo are Addis Paul Elmore, Cecil Guest, Don Vick and Bobby Drake, but no one knows who is who. If anyone knows, call the newspaper office at 386-3145 or email maria@hhnpaper.com.
