Drug trial offers hope for a cure

A successful Pfizer drug trial announced Monday could mean a COVID-19 vaccine would be available early next year.

Hamilton County Health Authority Dr. Randy Lee said the Pfizer trials are very promising with a 90-plus percent protection rate.

“This is heartening news,” he said. “The FDA should approve it with such strong preliminary study data.”

Hamilton Healthcare System clinics have completed the registration process to be COVID vaccine administration sites once a vaccine becomes available, he said.

Goodfellows kick off 2020 holiday season

The holiday time is here and once again and the Billingslea-Wilson Goodfellow organization is working toward another successful year.

The organization relies on monetary and gift donations to continue providing holiday cheer for families in Hamilton County.

In 2019 the organization helped 109 families. Each family was provided with a box of food, and gifts were provided for 170 children. Families with children are also given vouchers for the children to receive coats and shoes.

Because of COVID-19, the organization is expecting an increase in applicants this year.

Kayelen Helton has earned a prestigious top four spot in the inaugural Women’s Rodeo World Championship this weekend at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth.

Helton and her horse, Tarzan, will be heading in the Team Roping this Thursday with Kelsie Chace of Dublin catching.

She is heeling on Mighty with Lorraine Moreno of Mathis heading.

Helton will also be competing in the breakaway division on her horse, Cody.

Boots & Bling auction ends Saturday

Ruby and Pearl have had a busy week showing off items for Friends of Hamilton ISD’s virtual Boots and Bling auction.

The auction can be found at https://auction. showorks.cloud/fair/fohisd. (Don’t capitalize fohisd). Bidding is open until Saturday at 9:30 p.m.

At the end, explain the organizers, if any bids are placed in the last two minutes, the entire auction will be extended for three minutes.

Hamilton County election results

Hamilton County turned out in record numbers for last week’s federal, state and local combined election at the courthouse.

Locally, the late Jim McInnis was re-elected mayor wtih 723 votes to 457 for challenger Springer Courtney.

McInnis passed away just a few days prior to the election. Hamilton City Council members will decide next week whether to appoint someone to the position or leave it vacant until the next election in May.
