Membership key to Farm Bureau’s success

(HAMILTON, Texas)— It’s a great time to be a member of the Hamilton County Farm Bureau, and the organization welcomes new members to add strength to its numbers and influence, according to its president.

Sam Houston was so badly shaken by the Nov. 30, 1837 death of Deaf Smith, the famed San Jacinto scout, that he took a month-long leave of absence from the presidency of the Lone Star Republic.

Even though Erastus Smith was among the earliest of Anglo immigrants to the Mexican province, he was a late convert to the cause of independence. Hoping the climate would cure his ailing lungs, the Mississippian moved to San Antonio in 1821, married a local woman and for the next 14 years quietly raised a family.

Ceresini gets good report

Thanksgiving is extra special this year for the Ceresini family as they celebrate a cancer-free diagnosis for John.

“As of right now, we got a PET scan back last week that said John is cancer free,” said his father, Mike.

A May 2020 graduate of Hamilton High School, John was diagnosed late September with Burkitt’s lymphoma, a rare strain of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Ceresini has been undergoing treatments at MD Anderson and will need to take another treatment in December and January.

Salvation Army silent but still at work

Bell ringers will not be out this year, but The Salvation Army is still working to ‘Rescue Christmas’ for Hamilton County families.

“I’m sorry to say, you are not going to see our bell ringers this season, due to the virus,” said organizer Sharla Wenzel. “Our theme this year is ‘Rescue Christmas,’ so let’s keep this wonderful, important program going.”

Donations can be dropped by Extraco Bank or mailed to the local bank branch at P.O. Box 311, Hamilton, TX 76531

All donations will stay in Hamilton County.

Home for the holidays, please

With Thanksgiving this week, the Centers for Disease Control fear holiday gatherings will only compound the COVID-19 pandemic that is increasing every day and already overloading medical centers across the nation.

According to the New York Times, COVID cases increased 54 percent across the country over the past 14 days.

Despite the increasing numbers, the Transportation Security Administration reported more than a million travelers passed through airport security last Friday in preparation for the holiday.

Goodfellows kick off season

While out shopping this weekend, consider purchasing gifts to donate to Hamilton County children through the Billingslea-Wilson Goodfellow organization.

The organization has been making Christmas brighter for Hamilton County families since 1947.

Last year, the Goodfellows helped 109 families by providing a box of food, gifts for 170 children and vouchers for children’s coats and shoes.

Due to the world-wide pandemic, organizers are expecting an increase in applicants this year.
