THIS WEEK IN TEXAS HISTORY

One of the many articles that have kept alive the legend of hidden riches on a narrow strip of sand off the Texas Gulf Coast ran in the Harlingenbased Valley Morning Star on Oct. 27, 1966.

The subject of this always entertaining tale is the treasure supposedly buried on Padre Island by a band of castaways in the early days of the Civil War. Driven from their private paradise, the Singers never imagined they would lose everything they had created over the past decade and a half.

When the phone rang at the HHN last week, I wasn’t expecting a road trip, but jumped at the chance. I was intrigued by a call from Mrs. Bettie Black out at Star.

She told me about a new cell tower that has just been constructed near her house but she said she noticed something funny about some posts that were sticking up beside it.

Early voting continues in Hamilton County with voters coming in steady streams each day, according to Hamilton County Clerk Leanne Jackson.

Jackson said 304 voters – 100 more than in typical elections – cast ballots on the first day of early voting, and as of Tuesday morning, 1460 Hamilton County residents had voted.

“It has been very steady,” she said.

It’s an important election, with the nation’s presidency and other key leadership roles on the ballot.

COVID fatigue, weather could cause more illness

Hamilton County had 38 active cases of COVID-19 as of Monday evening, according to county health authority Dr. Randy Lee. Since reporting began, there have been 200 positive cases in the county.

Hamilton Independent School District Superintendent Clay Tarpley confirmed Tuesday morning that one of those cases is a high school student who last attended class on Oct. 14 and was tested Oct. 15.

After the positive result was reported, Tarpley said 25 students and one staff member were quarantined.

Ceresini home between chemo

“John is home and in good spirits,” said his father, Mike Ceresini, on Tuesday.

The Hamilton community is rallying behind the 18-year old who was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, earlier this month.

Ceresini completed his first round of chemo at MD Anderson and was excited to return home mid-week last week.

This week, John has been traveling to Waco daily for injections to boost his immunity and lab work. Plans are to return to MD Anderson next week for another treatment.
