The United States Postal Service has announced the official retirement of longtime rural carrier Tammy Burks of Evant.

Tammy has been with USPS for 28 years and nine months, the entire time on the same rural route.

She started her career Aug. 8, 1991, as a substitute rural mail carrier under Joy Gromatzky Giles. She was in that position for 19 years before getting the fulltime position in 2011.

Having been on the same rural route for her whole career and a native of Evant, she is an expert in Evant family history and folklore of the area.

This Week in Texas History

The people of Big Spring mourned the passing on Jan. 13, 1885 of the English earl who had been their boozy benefactor for the past year and a half.

Thirty-six years earlier, Joseph Heneage Finch was born into the good life of the English aristocracy. His father was the sixth Earl of Aylesford, which made Heneage the seventh in the series if he succeeded in outliving his sire.

Feb. 12 deadline for NRCS funds

TEMPLE — The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service in Texas has established a second funding application deadline of Feb. 12 for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

“We are encouraging producers to call their NRCS office to discuss conservation planning and financial assistance options,” said Kristy Oates, NRCS state conservationist for Texas. “Applications received by the Feb. 12 deadline will be ranked for funding by early June.”

Circle T Arena hosted the Texas Sheep/Cattle Dog Association Arena Timed Trials Saturday. In the competition, the dog takes the sheep around obstacles and then pens them. They are given five minutes to complete the tasks. Dogs and their trainers from across Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas competed in levels from Novice through Open. In the top photo, and above, Jerry Lynn of Ozona and Border Collie Vonnie successfully herd and pen a trio of sheep during the novice portion of the trials.

City hires PD chief

Hamilton City Council last Thursday met in special session and afterward authorized City Administrator Ryan Polster to hire Jason Brad Boulton as chief of Hamilton Police Department.

Boulton, who will begin his duties in Hamilton Feb. 1, has worked for the Lancaster Police Department since 1997, beginning as a patrol officer and advancing to patrol sergeant, team sergeant, patrol lieutenant, criminal investigation lieutenant and assistant chief, which has been his position since 2014.

Hamilton ‘good kids’ help one of their own

Hamilton raises good kids. One of those goodkids-turned-adults is 2003 Hamilton High School graduate Russell Allmandinger.

Russell was a super star athlete in high school – he did it all – football, basketball, discus, powerlifting. As a 92-pound freshman, he played nose tackle and aspired to play football for the Cowboys.

But today, Russell faces back surgery and prosthetic issues that stem back to birth, and he needs help from his hometown.

At three days old, Russell had his first surgery to correct bilateral club feet.
