Tarleton nursing prof earns exellence award

STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State University’s Dr. Chiquesha Davis has been named an Excellence in End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium Award winner for 2020.

Davis has been a part of the Tarleton faculty for six months. An assistant professor, she heads the Department of Post-Licensure Nursing.

She earned her associate’s degree in nursing from Tarrant County College and her undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees from UT Tyler.

Library commission announces virtual research webinars

AUSTIN – The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has announced a new virtual Research Webinars series, free online programming provided by its Archives and Information Services division. TSLAC reference staff will offer virtual versions of the popular Second Saturday workshops formerly provided on site.

TSU receives rural library grant

Tarleton State University’s Dick Smith Library has been selected as one of 200 libraries to participate in “Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries.”

More than 300 libraries applied for the grant.

“Our library is so grateful to have been chosen for this opportunity to help our community dealing with this pandemic,” said Interim Library Director Tracy Holtman. “We look forward to working with the Stephenville Public Library and Tarleton’s Career Services to help those looking for job resources.”

The desperate search of Britt Johnson

Surrounded by a raiding party of Kiowas, Texas’ most respected African-American and three other black teamsters had no choice but to stand and fight on Jan. 27, 1871.

Because he was born a slave, next to nothing is known about the early life of Britton Johnson. He was probably in his teens, when his owner Moses Johnson brought him to Texas from Tennessee in the late 1850’s.

ERIE, Pennsylvania — In a sure sign that spring is not far behind, the first Purple Martins of the year have been spotted in Texas.

The birds were seen Jan. 15 in the city of Gonzales by a Purple Martin enthusiast – one of many people throughout the eastern and central United States who track and report on the birds’ annual migration on behalf of the Purple Martin Conservation Association.

Governor praises county

Hamilton County ranks second in the nation in vaccination rates according to a tweet posted by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Monday.

“Rural Texas counties lead the county in vaccination rates,” Abbot posted. “They represent eight of the top 11 counties in America including the #1 and #2 ranked counties.

“Thanks to the many frontline healthcare workers who are achieving this success.”

Trailer team torches takers

Hamilton High School Ag Mechanics class debuted their Grand Champion 102-inch X 30-foot hydraulic tilt flatbed gooseneck trailer at the Hamilton County Livestock Show.

Last week, the trailer took not one, but both top honors at the No Name Ag Mechanics Show, what would have been the Fort Worth Stock Show.

It is a feat that Ag Mechanics teacher and welding instructor Jeffrey Jones says is rare.

Solar farm gets final nod

Hamilton Independent School District Board of Trustees Monday evening authorized the culminating steps in an agreement with Grizzly Ridge Solar for construction of a solar energy facility in Hamilton County.

No one spoke at a public hearing on the application for appraised value limitation on qualified property from Grizzly Ridge Solar LLC, Comptroller Application #1530, pursuant to Texas Tax Code 313.
