USDA offers producers help for losses to winter storms

COLLEGE STATION – The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides technical and financial assistance to help Texas farmers and livestock producers recover from damages brought on by winter storms Uri and Viola.

County to protest gun control act

Much of Monday’s Hamilton County Commissioners Court meeting was spent discussing a piece of proposed gun legislation that could severely affect Texas gunowners.

Dr. Eli Douglas on behalf of Energy for Schools donated $5000 to Friends of Hamilton ISD last Friday. Douglas and his wife, Joan, both graduated from Hamilton High School in 1951. He served on the board of non-profit organization Energy for Schools, which saved Texas school districts money on energy. Recent policy changes allowed districts to shop on their own for energy savings. With their mission complete, Energy for Schools closed, dispersing their coffers to their districts and granting each board member funds to give to a charity of their choice. “My parents have fond memories of their days at Hamilton,” said Jill McKay, Douglas’ daughter, as she presented his donation to FoHISD President Sara Ensor and Executive Director Gayle Edwards.

Hamilton schools are taking a spring break this week, but not before excelling in sports, fine arts and vocational competition. Above, the theater department presented “Reckless” and will advance to bi-district competition. Robbey won in cosmetology and will present longer and shorter haircuts and styles for women, a man’s tapered haircut and a formal updo. Madee won in men’s barbering and will present a longer man’s haircut and style, a tapered haircut and a flat top with a beard design and color. Both also will present a woman’s cutting edge cut and color and showcase a vintage salon layout and design.

County receives more COVID vaccine

Hamilton County Health Authority Dr. Randy Lee said Tuesday that the regional and local COVID vaccine supply is improving and should facilitate more high-risk persons being vaccinated.

Main Street gets state nod

Hamilton’s Historic Main Street program received word this week that it has received state accreditation and has been nominated for national accreditation.

FEEDING PATIENTS – Hamilton High School CNA students learned how it felt to be fed. They learned to talk to the patient, ask their preferences and go at the patient’s speed. Students were blindfolded so they had to depend on the caregiver to tell them what food item was next and ask them if they were through, wanted more, preferred something else or going too fast. The students also learned lifting techniques.

CATOE JOINS HAMILTON CENTRAL APPRAISAL DISTRICT - Linda Catoe was sworn in to the Hamilton Central Appraisal District review board by district employee Denise Hernandez. Catoe will fill the unexpired term of Mayor Jim McInnis, who passed away in the fall. She serves on boards for the City of Hamilton and Hamilton Main Street. Catoe is a district employee of the Soil and Water Conservation Board and previously retired from USDA.

FCCLA advances 8 teams to state

The FCCLA regional contest was held in Waco Feb. 25-26, and all eight Hamilton Star Event teams advanced to state.
