Property values go up this spring

Hamilton Central Appraisal District recently received the audit from the State Comptroller on property values in Hamilton County. The good news was that most Hamilton County schools passed the study and will receive full state funding. Unfortunately, Hamilton ISD did not pass for the second year so HCAD will be forced to raise the values this spring.

Rafter M Ranch of Hico is hosting a Longhorn Round Up at Circle T Arena this weekend.

“Since Houston canceled the youth and open Longhorn division this year, we wanted our youth to have a place to exhibit their animals after all the hard work they put in this show season,” said organizer Cori Garcia.

“We have raised funds for scholarships to be awarded, have cash premiums, show awards, a free concert Friday night and a whole lot of fun,” said Garcia.

Check-in begins Friday at noon.

Ramsey collection escapes damage

Crisis was averted last week at the Ramsey Gallery when a burst water pipe threatened to destroy the 40-year art collection that includes the works of Picasso, Van Gogh and many other masters.

Owner Ray Ramsey said, “Water soaked the ceiling tiles and at least six inches of water collected on the bottom floor.

“We worked very hard getting all the water out of the building,” he said.

The Ramsey Collection contains art from the 17 th to 20 th Century American, European & Modernist masters.

Comptroller extends franchise tax deadline

AUSTIN — In response to the recent winter storm and power outages in the state, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced his agency is automatically extending the due date for 2021 franchise tax reports from May 15 to June 15. The extension aligns the agency with the Internal Revenue Service, which earlier this week extended the April 15 tax-filing and payment deadline to June 15 for all Texas residents and businesses.

The due date extension applies to all franchise taxpayers. It is automatic, and taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms.

Dogs roar in Lion Relays

Hamilton’s high school track athletes were quick out of the gate as the starting gun fired for another track season last Thursday in Dublin.

Though cold and wet, the varsity Lady Bulldogs scorched the competition, earning team gold with 229 points in their first track meet of the year. Glen Rose was in tow with 127 team points, trailed by Tolar with 99 and Dublin with 85.

Ag mechanics team wins in San Antonio

Hamilton High School’s Ag Mechanics team was named Division Champion and Overall Grand Champion at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and also placed third in showmanship out of 498 projects.

Team members are Dawson Melde, Morgan Mehaffey, Emiley Hale and Denver Poe, and they are coached by ag teacher Jeffrey Jones.

Each student on the team received a $5000 scholarship and two belt buckles.

Jones said the team won between $45,000 and $50,000 in prizes in total at the San Antonio show.

Abbott lifts mask order

Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order Tuesday lifting the mask mandate in Texas and increasing capacity of all businesses and facilities in the state to 100 percent, effective next Wednesday, almost a year since the state was closed to all but essential workers.

The Governor, in conjunction with Texas Department of Emergency Management, also re-requested that an additional 32 counties - including Hamilton - be added to the federal Major Disaster Declaration for Individual Assistance.

UIL names ’52 team to top 100

UIL recognized the 1952 Hamilton High School Girls Basketball State Champion team as one of the top 100 state teams in the last 100 years.

The undefeated team consisted of Tommie Harlien McCollum, Louise Young Taylor, Barbara French, Anne Witty, Nancy Roberts Panell, Vada Raibourn West, Mary Scott, Elwanda Smith Barcroft, Mary Jo McKandless Gromatzky, Hallye Johnson Bottlinger, Hazel Jean Manning, sponsor Mary Garrett and Coach Ted Jones.

Gromatzky and McCollum were both seniors that year. They were team captains and starters. Both reside in Hamilton.
