OH, QUAIL! Eggs-cited third graders Talyn Banda, Loralei Bivens and Coy Bass were greeted back to school on Monday by hatching baby quail. The hatching project was a part of the students’ science education this six weeks.

Band cookoff this weekend

The 17th annual Hamilton Bulldog Band BBQ Cook-off is back this Friday and Saturday at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. The event is sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association sanctioned so IBCA contest rules apply.

Participants will arrive Friday and must be checked-in by midnight. All teams will need to attend the cooks meeting at 7 p.m. on Friday.

An entry fee of $125 includes brisket, two chicken halves and pork spareribs. Cooked entries are due Saturday afternoon. There is an 80 percent payback in prizes.

March is officially Kidney Disease Awareness Month, so it is fitting to begin this diary at this time, but for the sake of accuracy, my journey began almost seven years ago, when, after a routine annual checkup, I was first informed that it appeared my kidney function had dropped to approximately 55 percent, instead of an expected 85 to 90 percent.

Legion plans memorial

American Legion Post 222 is embarking on a project to memorialize servicemen in Hamilton County.

Post 222 is teaming up and the Hamilton County Historical Museum to install the memorial on museum grounds near the old bridge.

The two-part project includes a granite memorial for Hamilton County servicemen who died in service to their country and a brick paver walkway for all military servicemen.

Eminent domain reform promoted in HB 901

HAMILTON — Members of the state’s largest general farm and ranch organization continue to advocate for eminent domain reform during the 87th Texas Legislature.

“Texas Farm Bureau has long advocated for eminent domain reform,” Bennie Hromadka, Hamilton County Farm Bureau president, said. “We will not stop working this issue until meaningful changes have been achieved. Because the way the process stands now, it’s often not fair to private property owners.”

This individual has survived two pandemics, having been a child during the 1918 Spanish flu.

In his lifetime so far, this fellow has witnessed the invention of automobiles and spaceships, the Great Depression and two cars in every garage, prohibition and medical marijuana, women’s suffrage and a woman in the White House, the Dust Bowl and Hurricane Katrina, World War II and the Twin Towers.
