This isn’t the topic that I had planned to write about this week, but the information was just released and I wanted to share it ASAP.

It is about dogs and cats. Even if you do not have a dog or cat, please keep reading because I’m 100% certain that you have a friend or family member who does. After all, 67% of American households own at least one kind of pet, with 53% of American households owning dogs and 35.7% owning cats. Sadly, according to industry statistics, one in every three pets will go missing in their lifetime. Someday this information could be critical to them.

When you have a recipe that needs cooked, deboned chicken, how much chicken do you need to buy and cook? Avoid buying too little or too much with these helpful tips.

One cup cubed or shredded chicken:

• 1 cup of cubed or shredded chicken is about 5 ¼ ounces of cooked deboned chicken.

Hospital to host blood drive

Hamilton Healthcare System is hosting a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at 400 N. Brown St. in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus.

The pandemic has kept the blood supply at levels not seen in decades. Shuttered workplaces and virtual schooling led to blood drive cancellations and a potential loss of more than 50,000 units of blood collected. Carter BloodCare calls on the community to restock the shelves because blood is essential.

Saturday is election day.

Polls open at 7 a.m. at Hamilton City Hall, 200 E. Main and will be open until 7 p.m.

Voters will choose three city councilmen, two school board members and a mayor.

City council incumbents George Beard and Todd Jordan have filed for re-election as well as Doug Baker and Gary Haggard.

Hamilton Independent School District board of trustee candidates include incumbents Brenda Andrews and Randy Lee as well as Diana Freeman.

Rodney Craddick is the lone candidate for mayor.

COVID claims another resident

After several weeks of no positive COVID-19 case in Hamilton County, another life was lost to the virus this week, bringing the county’s total to 19 since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

Dr. Randy Lee, Hamilton County Health Authority, said Tuesday that COVID vaccines remain readily available at Hamilton Healthcare System clinics in Hamilton, Hico and Goldthwaite.

Benefit to help families

Bare Bones Barbecue and the Feed Mill in Gatesville have teamed up to host a Neighbors Supporting Neighbors event benefiting Gina Sellers, Rob Atkins and Cindy Ament Venable this Sunday.

“We wanted to do something,” said Chad Hill, co-owner of Bare Bones BBQ. “Gina is a fellow business owner.”

Gina, wife of native Hamiltonian and Hamilton High School math teacher Miles Sellers, owns the Knife and Cork restaurant in Gatesville. Last fall, Gina was struck with an undiagnosed painful ailment that has left her unable to walk with limited use of her hands.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION- Hamilton County Child Protective Services Board placed flags and a banner on the courthouse square for the month of April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month. In 2020, 279 children were removed from their home as a result of abuse or neglect across a five-county area. Most were returned to their families, but some were not. Statewide, 2962 children are waiting to find a permanent adoptive home, 288 of whom are in Central Texas. For foster and adoption information, contact adoptchildren.org.
