Food poisoning peaks in the summer months when warmer temperatures cause foodborne germs to flourish. Follow these steps for a safe and enjoyable grilling season.

When shopping, pick up meat, poultry, and seafood last, right before checkout. Separate them from other food in your shopping cart and grocery bags. To guard against cross-contamination, put packages of raw meat and poultry into individual plastic bags.

Hamilton County Historical Museum will have its annual cemetery walk May 1.

Plans are to honor individuals who had a great part in helping the town and county grow and develop, which this year include Frankie and George Golightly, Henry Martin Wieser, Roy “Spot” Brazil, Ted James, Felix Williams and others.

Recently there has been an increasing number of complaints about on-street parking, especially in our residential neighborhoods.

The complaints are seldom about passenger cars. The complaints are about commercial trucks, stock trailers, utility trailers, boats and recreational vehicles.

It will probably come as a surprise, but Chapter 58, Section 58-10 of Hamilton’s adopted Code of Ordinances states: Overnight parking for storage on any street or right-of-way is hereby prohibited.

Sea turtle nesting begins on coast

With sea turtle nesting season beginning along the Texas coast in early April, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is urging everyone using Texas beaches to do their part to help detect and protect threatened and endangered sea turtles on the beach. This includes the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, which is the most critically endangered sea turtle in the world, as well as the threatened loggerhead and green sea turtles.

As voters in ten Texas counties went to the polls on Apr. 10, 1937 to pick a new congressman, the youngest candidate on the ballot spent the day in a hospital bed.

After working his way through college at San Marcos and teaching school in Houston, Lyndon Baines Johnson joined the staff of Rep. Richard Kleberg. Three years later, he returned to the Lone Star State as administrator of the National Youth Administration, a New Deal Program.

Area code required starting Apr. 24

Hamilton telephone users will soon have to change the way they dial since the Federal Communications Commission voted to implement a single-purpose three-digit number for a suicide prevention hotline.

In Texas, callers in the 254, 361, 409, 806, 830, 915 and 940 area codes will have to use 10-digit numbers to make their calls beginning April 24.

For those who forget, the seven-digit number will still work until Oct. 24, according to CenturyLink.

If Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department or Hamilton Helping Hands is responding to a need, you’ll likely find Springer and Brenda Courtney in the middle of the volunteers.

But now the Courtneys find themselves in the middle of need, and accepting help has turned out to be a humbling experience.

COVID going down

Texas region TSAL, which includes Hamilton County, reports that only 4.4 percent of current patient hospitalizations are COVID-19 related, Dr. Randy Lee said Tuesday morning.

Lee, who is Hamilton County’s Health Authority, said COVID is “relatively quiet” on the local level.

“Vaccine supply continues to improve locally and statewide,” he said. “If you desire vaccination, supply should not be a factor moving forward.”

Anyone older than 16 can get a COVID-19 vaccination by calling their healthcare provider for an appointment.
