Josh Freeze now Commander Freeze

Hamilton’s Joshua Freeze is serving as Executive Officer of the USS Independence (LCS 2).

A 1992 Hamilton High School graduate, Freeze enlisted in the Navy after graduation and has worked his way from enlisted to officer.

A Texas native, Commander Freeze is a 2005 graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University and has served in a variety of sea and shore commands.

Commissioned through the Seaman-to-Admiral Program, he has served onboard USS Elliot (DD-967), USS Constellation (CV-64) and USS Nimitz (CVN-68) as an enlisted Damage Controlman and Master-at-Arms.

Hey! Hay for Heroes is headed this way

Hay for Heroes is headed to Hamilton this October.

Originally introduced to Hamilton as a fundraiser for the library, Hay for Heroes will raise funds for the American Legion Cunningham Post #222 Memorial Monument this year.

“Friends of Hamilton Public Library have generously loaned their annual fundraiser to the American Legion this year,” said organizer Robert Self.

Great Texas Birding Classic yields $1million in grant awards

AUSTIN—At the close of the biggest, longest, wildest birdwatching tournament in the country, organizers of the Great Texas Birding Classic announced a huge philanthropic milestone. Thanks to Texans who have been forming teams for a quarter-century to watch and listen for as many species of birds as possible, funds raised for conservation projects has topped $1 million.

“As the tournament continues to grow, we look forward to donating even more towards habitat conservation projects in Texas,” said Shelly Plante, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Nature Tourism Manager.

Youth hunter course July 27

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office of Brown County has announced a hunter education classroom course for novice or young hunters ages 9 to 17.

The course will be held July 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brownwood Claybird Club, 5875 CR 225, next to Brownwood Country Club.

“The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation,” said Scott Anderson, AgriLife Extension agent for Brown County.

Cody Ohl hospitalized

Six-Time World Champion PRCA tie-down calf roper Cody Ohl has suffered a major setback after developing sepsis after knee surgery.

Sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body responds to an infection, has Ohl fighting for his life.

Ohl is a long-time resident of Hico and a graduate of Hico High School.

An account has been set up at MCBank in Hico to help the family with medical expenses. Donations may also be taken to the MCBank in Hamilton.

Ohl will be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame this week.

Court debates budget, dispatch

Budget items and the Hamilton County Emergency Communications were the topics of discussion in Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting.

Last Thursday, Hamilton County Judge Mark Tynes and Commissioner Lloyd Huggins met with Jesse Hennage and Becky Cooley with the Central Texas Council of Governments regarding emergency communications.

The “key item was the dispatch console,” said Huggins.

Cooley recommend the console be replaced as quickly as possible.

Huggins suggested the Motorola system.

LONE STAR DEGREE

Taylor Long received the Lone Star FFA Degree at the Texas FFA State Convention. Lone Star FFA Degree is the highest degree of membership given by the Texas FFA Association and is the result of years of FFA involvement. Long serves as Area IV officer.

FSA taking nominations for committee

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency will accept nominations for county committee members until Aug. 2.

Elections will occur in certain Local Administrative Areas for these members who make important decisions about how federal farm programs are administered locally.

Nomination forms for the 2021 election must be postmarked or received in the local FSA office by Aug. 2.

Eviction day for the Cherokees

Refusing to submit to peaceful eviction from the Lone Star Republic, the Cherokee warriors stood their ground on Jul. 16, 1839 against the advancing Texans and thereby ensured a bloody day of reckoning for the Civilized Tribe.
