CHEER CAMP- Eleven Hamilton High School cheerleaders and five alumni helpers have had 65 Ann Whitney Elementary students at Cheer Camp this week. Brandon and Kelsey Buffe announce the birth of their daughter, Oaklyn Rhen Buffe.

Oaklyn was born Friday, June 25. She weighed 7.2 pounds and was 18 1/2 inches long.

Oaklyn was welcomed home by siblings Carson, Ella and Cutter.

Vietnam vet to speak at Pearl

Pearl Baptist Church will have a guest speaker, Dave Roever, July 25 at 6 p.m. under the tabernacle.

Roever is a Vietnam veteran and served as a U.S. Navy riverboat gunner in the elite Brown Water Black Beret.

Eight months into his tour of duty, he was burned beyond recognition when a phosphorous grenade he was poised to throw exploded in his hand.

He spent 14 months in the hospital and endured numerous major operations.

Better Living for Texans

Thumping. Shaking. Lifting. You have probably seen people using these methods to select a watermelon, but do they really work? Following the steps below will help you choose a melon that is perfect!

Use your eyes. Look the melon over before you select it. The melon should be firm and symmetrical. It should also be free from dents, bruises, or cuts.

Turn it over. The main indicator of ripeness is found on the underside of the melon. The underside of the melon should have a creamy yellow spot. This indicates it has ripened in the field.

Hamilton County Historical Museum

The Hamilton County Historical Museum will be open this Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Museum volunteers are working on several projects and hope to release a calendar of events soon.

The museum continues to work with the American Legion on the memorial monument. Organizers are planning a quilt and vintage handwork show in September, 25 th Anniversary celebration in November and Christmas Winter Wonderland in December.

Missing. Cody Fussel. Cody was last seen on a Greyhound Bus headed to Fayro. He was planning on attending the reunion of Sweetgum High School. Cody is one of two surviving members of the first graduating class. He is in his eighties and is a small man with thinning gray hair. When Gaynelle Verdeen went to meet Cody’s bus, he was not on it. If you have any information on the whereabouts of Cody, please contact Gaynelle, Peaches or Jimmie Wyvette at 254-784-9208.

Dove pageant entries due

Early entry deadline for the Hamilton County Dove Festival Pageant is July 30.

The pageant will be Aug. 28 in the Chandler Craig Auditorium at Hamilton High School.

Those who want to enter the pageant can pick up entry packets at the Herald-News office. The regular entry deadline is Aug. 13.

A mandatory rehearsal and information meeting will be Aug. 21 at HHS at 6 p.m.
