New film promises Billy the Kid answers

Storied Billy the Kid claimants “Brushy” Bill Roberts of Hico and John Miller of Prescott, Arizona, will finally get their day in court to prove their claim to being legendary outlaw Billy the Kid.

The trial, part of the upcoming docu-drama “The Final Trial of Billy the Kid.” will be filmed in downtown Albuquerque next week.

Hico maintains that “Brushy” Bill Roberts was The Kid, and he in fact went in front of New Mexico Governor Thomas Mabry in 1950 asking for the pardon he says he was promised by Territorial Governor Lew Wallace in 1878.

Hay for Heroes bales ready for decorating

Hay for Heroes bales have rolled out and are placed all over town. Each bale should be decorated by Sept. 30.

As in years past, bales will be judged and first, second and third place awarded with ribbons. The public can vote for a People’s Choice award through donation containers at participating locations.

Bob Self had the Best of Show photo in the Hamilton Dove Festival Photography Shootout. His “Sunset Reflection on Stock Tank” received accolades from all three judges.

In the People division, Cynthia Cates’ “Little Girl Loving on her Bunny” was champion and People’s Choice.

Reserve champion People went to Jamison Parker for “Red Head Laughing.”

Brookshire Brothers celebrates 100 years in grocery business

LUFKIN – Brookshire Brothers Inc. whole-heartedly believes in being good people who sell good food and do good deeds in the communities where they live and work, and they’ve been doing just that for the past 100 years.

Founded in September 1921, Brookshire Brothers has grown from a small general store in downtown Lufkin to encompass 116 grocery and convenience stores, 72 pharmacies, 87 fueling stations, a fleet of trucks and trailers, a massive, centralized distribution center, a handful of coffee shops and two event venues.

National Night Out Oct. 5 at courthouse

Hamilton’s law enforcement and safety agencies will host National Night Out Tuesday, Oct 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. on the courthouse grounds.

Hamilton Police Chief Brad Boulton said the event will include booths, vendors, inflatables and contests for kids.

“The best way to prevent crime is to know your neighbors and your surroundings,” Boulton said. “National Night Out is a time for our community to come together and get to know each other better. It is also a time for the community to get to know local law enforcement in a relaxed and fun environment.”

4-H to host ATV e-Course

Hamilton County 4-H was selected as a recipient of a Texas Farm Bureau Clover Cash grant award valued at $1,500.00. The application was selected from among many qualified applicants, so it is indeed an honor to be named a recipient. Farm Bureau appreciates efforts to provide Texas 4-H members the opportunity to help students understand the importance of advocating for agriculture.

School, KCLW settle mixup

Hamilton Independent School District board of trustees Monday evening discussed a grievance with radio station KCLW and board operating procedures and appointed the county Extension agent an adjunct staff member.

Ann Whitney Elementary fifth graders presented a program on the Constitution, and COVID and a stomach bug were blamed for falling attendance averages although enrollment is up.

Sandie Swinson Jaggars and Bill Huffman of KCLW discussed a misunderstanding between the radio station and HISD regarding broadcasting Hamilton Bulldog football games.
