Class of 1971 reunion Sept. 18

Hamilton High School’s Class of 1971 will have its 50-year reunion Sept. 18 at the Inn at Circle T, 4921 W Highway 36.

Classmates will gather at 2 p.m. in the inn’s meeting room or the pool area if COVID persists. They’ll break for an early BYO dinner at the Crossfire Steakhouse and Cantina, then reassemble for cake and more stories.

Bring your own afternoon and evening “refreshments” beyond tea and coffee.

Kindergarten students get their own books

Ann Whitney Elementary kindergarten students celebrated Book Day last week sponsored by BanCorp South, Rock House Masonic Lodge and First Presbyterian Church.

Each child recevied several books to start their own home libraries.

Teachers suggest 20 minutes of reading each night.

Court OKs agreements, updates proposed budget

The Hamilton County Commissioners court meeting was brief yet productive Tuesday morning.

The court ratified a resolution to approve terms and conditions of an interlocal agreement between Hamilton County and the Region 16 Service Center, as well as an interlocal agreement for participation in the Region 16 ESC Statewide Cooperative Purchasing Program.

An additional order was ratified for the November 2021 general election.

Hamilton County Judge Mark Tynes updated the court on the FY2021-2022 proposed budget stating, “We are getting very close to adopting.”

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, will forever be etched into the memory of this generation and many to come.

9/11. Many do not have an immediate connection to what transpired that dreadful day but share a bond that keeps it near to our hearts. It was a pivotal day in American history.

Early that morning, 19 men affiliated with the militant Islamist group al-Qaeda spread out and boarded American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77 and United Airlines Flight 93.

Hamilton honors brave heroes of 9-11

Twenty years after the terror attacks on America, citizens of Hamilton are invited to come together in a commemoration ceremony to honor the innocent victims of Sept. 11, 2001.

Hosted by the American Legion Post #222, the Patriot Day ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the west side of the Hamilton Courthouse.

Local churches will ring their bells at approximately 7:45 a.m., 8:03 a.m., 8:43 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. followed by a moment of silence.

Nancy Diaz – I was at home with baby Catherine, she had just turned 1 on Sept. 7 and I was playing with her in our living room when I saw it on the news. My thoughts were first disbelief, this can’t really be happening, then shock of the massive destruction that was unfolding in front of us, then sadness for all of the people trapped in the towers. Once mention of terrorist involvement came to light, then looking at Catherine it was fear for the future.

KICKING OFF A NEW YEAR – Hamilton 4-H kicks off a new year in September with hands-on, learn-by-doing opportunities for local youth. Hamilton County offers two clubs. I-Spy meets first Wednesday of every month at Fair Park at 5:15 p.m., and Triple H meets first Monday of each month at the Agrilife Conference room at 5 p.m. Interested youth are encouraged to register online this month. Senior Presley Sliger led the first meeting of the I-Spy club Wednesday.

Hico student attends Texas Ranch Brigade

Jilly Darden, a student at Hico High School, attended the Texas Ranch Brigade this summer. She was a cadet in the 9 th Battalion Ranch Brigade at the Warren Ranch in Santa Anna.

The mission of Texas Brigades is to educate young people with leadership skills and knowledge in ranching, wildlife, fisheries and land stewardship.

Jilly said she learned valuable lessons about ranch management, animal well-being and handling and teamwork.
