2020-21 HAMILTON COUNTY 4-H OFFICERS Hamilton County 4-H members met last week to elect new offiers for the upcoming year: Mattie Ondrusek – Delegate at Large, Tucker Ondrusek - Hico Editor, Presley Sliger – Secretary, Nik Adams, Taylor Long – Treasurer, Joe Polster – Vice President, John Polster – President, and Zeb Murphree – Hamilton Editor with Hamilton County Agrilife Extension Agent Bruce Boyd. Membership for Hamilton County 4-H is open to youth entering third grade through high school. Registration for the 4-H year starts Sept.1 with online enrollment at Texas.4Honline.com

Dam inspection July 22-23

WACO – Highway 22 crossing the Whitney Dam will be reduced to one lane beginning July 22 and concluding July 23, weather permitting. The closure will be conducted both days between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The two-day temporary lane closure will allow the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct routine bridge maintenance and inspection of the dam. During the closure, wide loads will be restricted from traveling in the work zone.

TxDOT urges motorists to use caution, watch for traffic control personnel, and to slow their speed approaching work zones.

Let’s talk about… When building permits are needed

Cities issue building permits for two reasons: to enforce zoning regulations and to ensure the safety of residents.

Without permits to enforce zoning regulations, any business could be built on that vacant lot right next to the house that you saved years to purchase. Just imagine – music, laughter, lights, traffic and people crossing your front lawn at midnight.

Storm’s reopens Tuesday

“We are back open!” Storm’s owner Mike Kolodziej said Tuesday morning, although he added that hours may fluctuate as employees become available to work again.

On Saturday, Storm’s released a statement on Facebook that it would close immediately and until further notice.

Virus cancels Schoen tourney

This weekend would have been the 30 th annual Gary Wayne Schoen, Jr. Golf Tournament at Perry Country Club. Due to COVID, the tournament has been canceled.

“This is not a golf tournament, it’s a reunion,” said Gary Schoen, “and we just don’t want anyone to get sick.”

The tournament began in June 1990 to celebrate the life of 1987 Hamilton High School graduate and 2A golf state medalist, Gary Wayne Schoen, Jr.

Each year, the tournament has brought schoolmates, friends and family back to Hamilton for a weekend of celebration and memories.

Shive VFD cancels fish fry

Shive Volunteer Fire Department has cancelled its annual fish fry due to the COVID-19 virus. This is the department’s only fundraiser for the year, so donations are always welcomed and appreciated.

Donations can be mailed to Shive VFD, 170 CR 518 Hamilton TX 76531.

A new tanker is set to arrive in September.
