For the first time since the 1991 Bulldogs last claimed an area title, the 2021 Hamilton Bulldogs upended Forsan two games to one last week on the campus of Abilene Christian University to capture Hamilton’s just third area-round baseball championship.

Fun times at Pearl

The Pearl Bluegrass event, which had been closed because of COVID-19, started again on May 1 and will resume June 5 at the Pearl Community Center, 6301 FM 183.

The free event includes acoustic-only jams and stage shows throughout the day in a family-friendly atmosphere.

Hookups are available for trailers and campers, and tent camping is available Thursday through Sunday morning.

The kitchen is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Satuday with sandwiches and desserts.

There is no down time for the city. Whether in reactive mode, responding to a problem, or in proactive mode, anticipating and adjusting for change, the Mayor, City Council, city employees, and volunteers on various boards and commissions are working every day, 12 months a year. Here’s an update on some of those efforts:

Court sets rules for inspectors

Hamilton County Commissioners Court Tuesday morning set up guidelines for representatives to inspect septic systems, accepted a bid on a tax deed property, welcomed a new Child Protective Services Board member and appointed Precinct 4 Commissioner Dickie Clary to the Central Texas Council of Governments executive committee.

Commissioners also discussed the American Rescue Plan Act 2021 and the uncertainty of how funds will be distributed and received.

This Week in Texas History

A boiling black cloud rolled into Goliad on May 18, 1902 rattling windows with earsplitting thunderclaps and pelting the historic town with huge hailstones. But the worst was yet to come from the killer storm.

Asked to list the deadliest tornadoes in Texas history, many might name the terrible twister that hit Waco in 1953 or maybe the Wichita Falls and Saragosa calamities of 1979 and 1987. Hardly anyone, however, would mention the tornado that caught Goliad napping on a sleepy Sunday afternoon 119 years ago.

Energy Cemetery Meeting

Hamilton County Junior Livestock Association meeting will be Monday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Jayson Harris Pavilion.

Museum meeting

Hamilton County Historical Museum will meet Thursday, May 13, at 5 p.m. at the museum.

Lions Hamburger Lunch

Hamilton Lions Club will host its annual hamburger lunch Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lions Club building. Cost is $8 per plate with indoor seating and drive through available. Proceeds go toward Lions Club scholarships.

THERE’S A NEW MAYOR IN TOWN! Rodney Craddick took the oath of office Friday to become Hamilton’s new mayor after the May 1 elections. City Secretary Misty Boatwright also administered the oath to Councilmen Doug Baker, George Beard and Todd Jordan.

C-word scares mom into new lifestyle

Candace Stroud has become accustomed to hearing her doctor tell her she has something weird but hearing the “C” word changed her life.

Candace had recently lost her uncle, James Hall, to melanoma when she visited Dr. Robbye Lengefeld and as an afterthought asked her to check some moles on her back.

“I’ve always been freckly and moley,” Candace said. “And I’m a single person, so I didn’t have anyone to ask if there are spots on my back. I had no intention to ask the doctor, it was just ‘by the way.’

LEGACY- Taylor Long became just the seventh Hamilton athlete to ever capture a state gold medal after placing first in the 800-meter run at the UIL State Track and Field Championships in Austin last Friday.
