Goodfellows apps due Monday

Monday is the deadline to apply for gifts from the Billingslea Wilson Goodfellow Christmas program.

Applications are available at Hamilton Herald-News, Lee Health Care, CCS Medical Equipment and MC Bank and should be returned to those entities by Dec. 6.

The Goodfellows rely on monetary and toy donations to continue providing for Hamilton families. So far this season, $2700 has been donated.

Family Dollar, Dollar Tree now open in Hamilton

CHESAPEAKE, Virginia – Dollar Tree, Inc. has announced its new Family Dollar and Dollar Tree “combo” store opening in Hamilton.

The 10,207 square foot store opened last week, but officially will open Thursday, Dec. 2, at 519 W. Main St.

In addition to providing everyday low prices and a broad assortment of essential products, the Family Dollar section of the store offers frozen and refrigerated food, a large selection of pantry goods, beauty and health merchandise, household supplies, basic apparel, baby and toddler necessities, pet food, electronics, toys and home décor.

Community center open weekdays

The Hamilton Community Center is offering free, hot meals Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for anyone who would like to come by and eat.

The center is offering the following meals this week:

Wednesday, Dec. 1 – Soup

Thursday, Dec. 2 – Pizza

Friday, Dec. 3 – Casseroles

Monday, Dec. 6 – Chicken

On Thanksgiving, the community center served 72 meals.

Mondays are bingo day, Tuesdays are Jam Session, Wednesdays are education day with a brief speaker, Thursdays are domino day and Fridays are poetry day.

Online ranch seminar Dec. 9 via AgriLife

A multi-county Farm and Ranch Virtual Seminar for farmers and ranchers, conducted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, is scheduled for Dec. 9.

The cost is $50, and online registration closes at 5 p.m. Dec. 8 at https://tx.ag/D8FRVS. The event runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break as well as short breaks after each speaker.

Membership key to HCFB success

It’s a great time to be a member of the Hamilton County Farm Bureau, and the organization welcomes new members to add strength to its numbers and influence, according to its president.

“We pride ourselves in being the voice of Texas agriculture, but you don’t have to be a farmer or rancher to be a member of the Hamilton County Farm Bureau. We invite everyone who has an interest in supporting agriculture and the rural way of life to be a part of our organization,” Bennie Hromadka, HCFB president, said. “There are a lot of things to like about being a Farm Bureau member right now.”

Cattle brands must be registered by Feb. 28

Texas cattle brands must be re-registered, regardless of how old they are, by Feb. 28.

In Texas, brands must be re-registered every 10 years.

Brand re-registration always begins in the year ending with a one. For example, the current brand re-registration period began in August and closes Feb. 28, 2022.

In Hamilton County, the fee to register a brand is $15 per location, according to County Clerk Cynthia Puff. Forms and payment are accepted at the county clerk’s office.

A paws to help Bulldogs Dec. 4

Dust off your boots and polish up your bling - Boots and Bling kicks off Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Circle T Resort.

Boots and Bling is the primary event for the Friends of Hamilton ISD Education Foundation. Monies raised during the event are given back to students and teachers in the form of grants, dual credit tuition assistance, scholarships and special projects.

A limited number of tickets are available for the event. Tickets are $75 or $50 for HISD staff and school board members and can be ordered online at friendsofhamiltonisd.org

Museum to host Winter Wonderland

Hamilton County Historical Museum volunteers invite everyone to walk through their winter wonderland Christmas fundraiser this weekend.

The event is set for 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, with a variety of holiday activities including crafts and décor booths, games with prizes, food, a bake sale, silent auction and inflatables.

The crafts and décor booths will be in the Smith and Jones Building with the rest of the activities located on the grounds of the museum.

Cookies and wassail will be available.

Pottsville church celebrates 130 years

Trinity Lutheran Church in Pottsville is celebrating 130 years of worshipping in the community.

The church was organized Jan. 1, 1891, by Lutheran families throughout western Hamilton County. The original church constitution was signed by 10 members who had settled in the agricultural areas around Pottsville, McGirk and Shive.

Charter members were Christ Hiller, Adolph Riewe, John Kopp, Bernard Pfluger, Leopold Albrecht, Leonhard Schlee, Friedrich Riewe, Richard Lapp, Christian Uhle and John Anger.
