PTSD Awareness Day Understanding PTSD

According to research, an estimated 70 percent of adults in the United States have experienced a traumatic event at least one time in their lives.

Of these people, up to 20 percent go on to develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The stress caused by a traumatic event can often affect a person mentally, emotionally and physically. Research suggests that extended trauma may even interrupt and change the brain’s chemistry. A traumatic event can often change a person’s views about themselves and the world around them, which may increase the likelihood of developing of PTSD.

Secretary Perdue announces new dairy margin coverage signup begins June 17

WASHINGTON, June 14, 2019 — U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announces that signup begins June 17 for the new Dairy Margin Coverage program, the cornerstone program of the dairy safety net that helps dairy producers manage the volatility of milk and feed prices, operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency.

Home Depot, local volunteers beautify home

Last Wednesday The Home Depot Foundation partnered with Bancorp South, the Ministerial Alliance and Community Outreach Housing, based in Stephenville, to beautify the exterior of a local veteran’s home.

Approximately 100 volunteers from Bancorp South, the Hamilton Lions Club, Hope House, Cowhouse Equipment, Storms and Granbury’s Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force, supported the project.

We had a great turnout for our Fishin’ with Footballer Camp. It was a super way for our football guys to connect with the younger students! There are several people we would like to thank for their help in making this day work. I would first like to thank the football students and the coaches who made this a part of their Saturday! There were several in attendance that helped students and made connections with the youth.

New council off to rocky start

Can the new Hamilton City Council get the job done?

Folks are beginning to wonder after last Thursday’s fiasco of a meeting in which everyone wanted to have their say, and no one wanted to listen.

Three new members were elected May 5 to join two standing members with tenure of one year.

City Hall was packed to capacity, according to fire code, and a few people were turned away at the door. Five officers monitored attendance and wanded those entering the room for firearms.

HISD honors John Hall

Hamilton Independent School District board of trustees Monday evening voted to rename the field-house at Kooken Field the “John Hall Fieldhouse.”

“Big John spent more time in the fieldhouse than anyone else in the last 10 or 15 years,” said Hamilton High School head coach Casey Jones. “I was talking to Coach Wilde this morning, and he said he thinks it’s the perfect way to remember him and for everyone to remember him in the future.

Post 222 retires flags

American Legion Cunningham Post 222 officers retired American flags during a ceremony on Flag Day Friday.

The United States Flag Code § 176 states, “the flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America.”

When flags become faded or worn in service, they should be retired and destroyed in a dignified way. Traditionally, this has been through incineration during a special ceremony.

Weather postones roof romp

Hamilton County Commissioners met Tuesday morning with the intention of inspecting the roof of the courthouse with a roofing expert. The stormy weather and threatening clouds precluded the court to postpone for an hour, then until the expert could return.

During the open comments, Precinct 3 commissioner Lloyd Huggins presented that TxDOT has agreed that the county has completed the match project for the Leon River Bridge and has given the county a two-year extension on the project.

Summer reading program next week

Readers of all ages will explore all things space this summer as Hamilton Public Library presents “A Universe of Stories” during its Summer Reading Program next week.

Activities will include group games, space-related crafts, art projects, science and engineering experiments and more.

The program is open to young people ages 5-12 with programs, prize drawings, storytimes, a reading challenge and more.

The program is scheduled for June 25-28 and runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon each day.

From Quillbur, the adorable albino hedgehog that lives at the Jennie Trent Dew library, and Ms. Sylvia’s stories at the Mills County Historical Museum to the flint knapping in the J. Waddy Bullion Botanical Gardens and the tiny houses made of recycled materials at Salvage Shelters Tiny Homes, there is much to do with kiddos in Goldthwaite this summer.
