Texas will bounce back From ‘double whammy’

While the pandemic and oil glut create a double dose of devastation, three Texas A&M scholars tell Chancellor John Sharp that they see new economic opportunities rising from the rubble.

COLLEGE STATION — Oil prices will rebound before the year’s end. The doors of bars and restaurants will host reopening celebrations. Long-lasting changes will spring forth in industry, education and consumer behavior.

Counseling services open at TSU

In the midst of rapid change on campus and across the globe, Tarleton State University’s Student Counseling Services remains open for business, not only assisting existing clients but offering support in a variety of ways and formats to the entire campus community.

A series of short videos is on YouTube at the Tarleton Wellness channel. Topics are wide-ranging and include hope and resiliency, how to succeed in online courses, changing your thoughts and behaviors, and accessing helpful online resources. Fresh topics are being explored on a regular basis.

Main Street board gets organized

The Hamilton Historic Main Street Advisory Board met telephonically April 28, at noon.

Although COVID-19 has affected activity, plans continue to be made to build our new community program.

Board members Kevin Cude, Jim Eidson, Keith Gatewood, Chrissy Lane, Jim McInnis and Clay Tarpley were able to attend and participate virtually.

In action items during the meeting, the board agreed on vision and mission statements:

FB offers fun ag-tivities for kids

Social distancing, working from home and online classes are the “new normal,” with families looking for activities to fill the hours and help with hands-on learning.

Empty grocery store shelves and grocery item limits have people thinking differently about where food comes from.

Texas Farm Bureau has many resources for families to learn more about agriculture. In addition to gaining a better understanding of where and how food and fiber are grown, kids can engage in virtual lessons, cooking activity videos, recipes and fun.

USDA unveils funding plans

Texas farmers and ranchers impacted by the coronavirus could receive at least some aid from the U.S. Department of Agriculture by the end of May.

On April 17, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and President Donald Trump announced a $19 billion program consisting of two parts.

There will be $16 billion in direct payments to farmers and ranchers who have experienced unprecedented losses during this pandemic.

The program is open to farmers and ranchers regardless of size or market outlet if they suffered eligible losses.

Solar farm rep seeks county tax abatement

Hamilton County commissioners last Tuesday met with a representative of Grizzly Ridge Solar Farm regarding possible tax abatement and encouraged County Judge Mark Tynes to file an attestation regarding local businesses reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The court discussed a Texas Transportation grant, approved requests from the sheriff’s office, adopted subdivision rules and approved bond and bond renewals for five county employees.

HGH to renovate Solutions building

Hamilton County Hospital District board of directors voted last Wednesday to begin renovations at the Solutions Behavioral Health building on the Hamilton General Hospital campus.

The board approved quality improvement reports, medical and allied health staff appointments and financial reports.

The board authorized an upgrade to the former Special Care Clinic building, now Solutions Behavioral Health, to range between $20,000 and $40,000.
