Seasonal allergies: The eyes have it

(StatePoint) Suffering from itchy, watery eyes? You may have ocular allergies or you could have another issue entirely, such as chronic dry eyes.

Experts say that getting the correct diagnosis is the only way to treat symptoms properly.

“Chronic dry eye often mimics the symptoms of seasonal allergies and must be approached entirely differently,” says Arian Fartash, VSP network optometrist. “Many over-the-counter allergy treatments can actually make dry eyes worse, so make an appointment with your eye doctor to determine the exact cause of your discomfort.”

Court waives policy for hurt worker

Hamilton county commissioners Tuesday approved an exception for an injured county employee who is 10 days shy of meeting the six-month requirement to use vacation and sick time.

County Judge Mark Tynes encouraged the commissioners to keep track of their budgets for roads and bridges due to the recent rains and receding water.

The court approved $48,414.81 in bills and $66,623.77 in payroll with minutes in the consent agenda.

Trick or Treat, Dove Fest this weekend

Trick or Treat around the square Friday will actually be “Trick or Treat ALMOST around the square.”

Barricades will be set up in front of the chamber of commerce and Rountree Appliances to keep children away from the intersection of highways 281 and 36.

“With the construction going on at that intersection, and heavy traffic expected since it’s a Friday afternoon, we felt it best to keep our children safe and block off that corner,” said Hamilton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Hinton.

The bales throughout town will be on display until the end of the month, and the People’s Choice fund-raiser brought in $2114.94 for library renovation.

Dove Festival headliner Parker McCollum is an artist on the ascent.

The 6’3” Austin-based singer, songwriter and performer’s fervent live shows — made up of self-penned songs fans already know every word to — have seen an exponential increase in attendance in just a year.

With his latest 10-track Probably Wrong album anchoring his string of sold-out concerts, Parker brings his show to Dove Festival Saturday night. Tickets are still available online, at the chamber of commerce office or at the door.

Early voting gets under way

Early voting is under way at Hamilton County Courthouse and will continue through Nov. 5 for federal, state and local offices.

Locally, Hamilton County Commissioners Keith Allen Curry and Dickie Clary are on the appropriate ballots for Precincts 2 and 4, respectively. Both are running unopposed.

Also running unopposed for county seats are incumbents are County Judge Mark Tynes, District Clerk Sandy Layhew, County Clerk Kiesha Fisher Bagwell, Justice of the Peace James Lively and County Treasurer Shawna Dyer.

Hamilton dad dies in motorcycle crash

Hamilton dad and volunteer firefighter Rocky Bates died Saturday, Oct. 13, in a two-vehicle crash east of Hamilton.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers responded at approximately 11:30 p.m. to an accident on State Highway 22 just east of County Road 221.

A 1985 Honda motorcycle was traveling eastbound, and a 2005 GMC pickup was pulling out of a private drive onto the highway.

The pickup, driven by Billy Brumbalow, 33, of Hamilton pulled into the path of the motorcycle, driven by Bates, 36.

Bates was pronounced dead at the scene.

Henkes competing in Mrs. Texas Pageant

Hamilton teacher, volunteer and mother Nancy Henkes will represent Hamilton County in competing for the title of Mrs. Texas on May 2-4, 2019, at the Palace Theater in Corsicana.

Henkes, a Baylor University graduate, was chosen to compete for the title of Mrs. Texas from a field of applicants throughout Texas. Her commitment to give back to her community, school and family were significant in her selection to compete as Mrs. Hamilton County.

“I teach my students and my children to be a better you every day,” she said. “That applies to everything you do in life.
