Hollis Wimberley
Clarence Hollis Wimberley, 92, of Clyde died Friday, March 6, 2020.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 10, at the Bailey Howard Funeral Home Chapel of Clyde with David Peterson officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Clyde Cemetery.
Hollis was born on March 21, 1927, in Abilene to Clarence H. and Lottie Fay (Sherrod) Wimberley. At the age of 17, he dropped out of school to join the Navy to fight for our country in World War II. He was stationed in Hawaii, Guam and Sipan.
Following his return, he married his longtime sweetheart, Estelle Wright, on July 29, 1949, in Abilene. They were married for 65 years until her death in 2014. Hollis was a member of Highland Church of Christ for 47 years.
Hollis was known as a jack of all trades. He could fix anything and build anything. He was a hard worker and worked daily until the age of 88. After retiring from Bandag in 1985, he owned and managed a wrecker service and wrecking yard. He also owned several rental properties.
Hollis loved to work in his garden, fish and travel. He was always ready for a road trip. He loved to spend time with his many friends and family.
One of the highlights of his career was when he worked for NASA. In 1969, he worked there when we put the first man on the moon. He helped carry the moon rocks to be studied and had to be quarantined for several days.
Hollis never met a stranger. He was known for his generosity and was willing to help when needed. He loved his family and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son Gary Wimberley and wife Kathy of Clyde; three daughters, Glenda Garrison and husband Burres of Weatherford, Sherri LeBlanc and husband Dale of Hamilton and Patricia Rudock and husband Michael of Azle; sister Maxine Casey and husband Raleigh of Friendswood; 17 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Estelle, daughter Debbie Bostick, parents Clarence and Lottie, two brothers, Bobby Wimberley and Douglas Wimberley, and sister Pauline Reynolds.
