Ruth Dorothy Zschiesche Young, 95, passed away Jan. 12, 2019, at the Senior Care Home in Stephenville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Keith Reich officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Pottsville.

Mrs. Young was born Sept. 7, 1923, in the family home in Pottsville, the twelfth of 12 children born to Herman and Theresa Zschiesche.

She married Woodrow “Woody” Young Sept. 19, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1990.

She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Clinton Young; her brothers, Herbert, Willie, Arnold (Buck), Norman, Edgar and Charles; and her sisters, Ida (an infant), Julia Gromatzky, Anna Limmer, Sophie Hoffman and Frieda Streger.

She attended Christian Day School at Immanuel Lutheran in Pottsville and finished her schooling at Pottsville High School. She worked at the telephone office in Hamilton and later as a bookkeeper for the Garner Alvis Department Store. Ruth was a sheriff’s wife for 21 years. She and her family lived in the Hamilton County Jail for 12 years, where she cooked meals for the prisoners.

Later she lived and worked at the Spotted Horse Inn and Restaurant. She enjoyed working in her flower beds and baking. She was a cancer survivor and a caregiver her entire life.

She is survived by her children, John Young and wife Glennetta and Steve Young and wife Bobbie; grandchildren Jason Young, J.D. Young and wife Stacey, Brandon Young and wife Kylie and Jessica Purvis and husband Jeremy; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jason Young, J.D. Young, Brandon Young, Jeremy Purvis, Derek Young, Dakota Young, Clay Young and Logan Young.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hamilton or the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Pottsville.
