Linda Abernathy
Linda Elaine Mahurin Abernathy, 72, of Evant, passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, at Seton Williamson Hospital, Round Rock.
Services were held Thursday, Dec. 27, at First United Methodist Church in Hamilton with James Yates officiating. Interment was in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Evant, under the direction of Riley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Abernathy was born in Kirksville, Missouri, Oct. 15, 1946, the daughter of the late Wilfred Mahurin and Cleta Mae Roberts Mahurin.
She was married to Jerry Abernathy Jan. 26, 1989. He preceded her in death Dec. 1, 2015. She also was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Snitker.
She grew up on a farm in the community of East Center of Kirksville and attended a one-room schoolhouse for first through eighth grades. She graduated from Kirksville High School in 1964 and attended Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville. She moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and worked at Hallmark Cards for many years.
At the time of her death, Linda was employed as a secretary for the First United Methodist Church in Hamilton. She was grateful for all the wonderful friends she made while there; she enjoyed her job. Her greatest love was raising her three children. She was an excellent cook and very talented in many ways. She loved to fish, sew, crochet, garden and can. Linda spent her leisure time watching old reruns of Perry Mason and Gunsmoke. She and Jerry loved their animals, and after Jerry passed away her Boston Terrier, Lilly, kept her company and she loved that dog very much.
Over the last few years Linda was able to fulfill her dream of traveling. She visited New York City enjoying everything the city had to offer especially Broadway plays and Junior’s famous New York Cheesecake. In July of this year she was in Telluride, Colorado, for her niece’s wedding. The highlight of this year was a trip to Scotland and Ireland with her sister and brother-in-law.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
Survivors include two brothers, Laverne Mahurin of Kirksville and Dean Mahurin of Hanna City, Illinois; sister and brother-in-law Judy and Don Blakely of Georgetown; daughters Lisa Snitker of Mount Vernon, Missouri, and Stacy Harper of Georgetown; four stepchildren, David and wife Pam Abernathy of Hutto, Donnie Abernathy of Georgetown, Scott Abernathy of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, and Angie Abernathy-Ierbeck of Amarillo; three grandchildren Gracy Thompson of Leander, Dalton Harper of Brownwood and Zach Harper of Oklahoma; five step grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers were Lisa Snitker, David Abernathy, Donnie Abernathy, Scott Abernathy, Angie Abernathy-Ierbeck and Charlie Johnson.
