Franklin Sprague
Franklin Howard Sprague (Frank) of Hamilton, passed away on the afternoon of Dec. 3, 2020.
A graveside service will be held Dec 11 at 2 p.m. ine Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton with Rev. Drew Dabbs and Paster Samantha Chambers officiating.
Frank was born June 3, 1940, to Howard Sprague and Mary Auman Sprague in Asheboro, North Carolina. His father, who was raised in Dallas, made the decision to return to Texas following the death of his wife. Howard re-married and bought a farm just outside of Azle. As a result, Frank was raised on the farm and attended school in Azle, graduating in 1958.
Frank attended Texas A&M and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Wildlife Management. Frank was one of the first to receive this degree from Texas A&M. For most of Frank’s working life he was employed by the USDA Soil Conservation Service as a Wildlife Biologist. Frank worked at several locations, his longest tenure as a State Biologist in Temple. Frank retired from the Conservation Service in 1995.
After his retirement, Frank and Evelyn made Hamilton their new home. Frank was active in the First Methodist Church. He served in many ways including the ministry of providing rides for those unable to drive.
He was active in many other organizations in Hamilton. He served as president of the Perry Country Club and on the Hamilton County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. Frank was a Commissioner for the Hamilton County Historical Commission. He genuinely loved Hamilton and enjoyed being a part of the community.
Frank had many hobbies. He had enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting sports and golf. Frank also loved to read. You would be hard pressed to find anyone more knowledgeable about Texas History. In later years he lost interest in many of his hobbies, but he never lost interest in golf and reading. He also remained active at church for as long as his health allowed.
As much as Frank loved to have a good time and enjoy his hobbies and friends, he always loved his family the most. We who are a part of his family were truly blessed to have him in our lives.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Sprague of Hamilton; his son, Howard Sprague and wife Lisa of Hamilton; his daughter, Kathy Sprague Lovelace and husband Tom of Belton; and his five grandchildren, Kallie Lovelace, Garrett Lovelace, John Sprague, Clay Sprague and Lance Sprague.
