Barbara Caraway
Barbara Gene Gregory Caraway passed away Oct. 24, 2020, at the age of 82, in Hamilton.
Graveside services were held Oct. 27 in Oakwood Cemetery.
Barbara was born Aug. 18, 1938, in Goldthwaite. She was the daughter of Vada Lee McCarty Gregory and C. D. Gregory. She attended school in Hamilton, was crowned Hamilton’s first Homecoming Queen in the fall of 1955 and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1956. She met her forever sweetheart, Dale, in 1954. They were married Jan. 21, 1956, and joyfully shared 62 years together before Dale’s passing in 2018. They were blessed with two children, Beverly Dale and Brent Lee.
Barbara worked as a telephone operator and secretary for many years before retiring to devote her life to her family and home. Barbara joined First Baptist Church in Hamilton in 1958 and remained a faithful and devoted member for the remainder of her life. She served her church as a Sunday School teacher and was an integral part of the FBC Kitchen Committee, helping to prepare meals and snacks for VBS and Summer Music Camp. Barbara, Dale and family helped with VBS in Creede and Lake City, Colorado, on several occasions.
Besides church, Barbara loved working in her yard. Barbara and Dale hosted many weddings and photography shoots.
In addition, she loved cooking for others and encouraging her family and friends. Above all, she spent the later part of her life, and might have told you the best part of her life, as Grandma and Great-grandma. Blake and Meghan were her pride and joy until she became great-grandma to Caellum, Nolyn and Karysn. She never missed an opportunity to love and spoil her precious babies.
Barbara was known for her sweet, kind, caring and gentle loving spirit. Even in her final days, her concern was for those she held most dear.
Barbara was preceded in death by the love of her life, Dale; her only grandson, Blake Nelson Goerdel; parents Vada and C. C. Gregory; sister Marie Earls; mother-in-law Juanita Lee Caraway; nephew Ricky Earls; and great nephews Kyle Hall and Archer Lombard.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughter Beverly and husband Brett Rohde of Hamilton; son Brent Caraway of Shallowater; granddaughter Meghan and husband Cody Wagner of Brenham; great-grandsons Caellum Blake and Nolyn David; great-granddaughter Karsyn McCrae. Also surviving are sister Peggy and husband Marion Pipkin; brother Blaine and wife Connie Massingill; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; and her longtime best friend, Angie and husband Don Cook.
