GT nominations sought for 2019-20

First- through eighth-grade students in Hamilton Independent School District may be nominated for the Gifted and Talented program by parents or community members until April 15.

Parents or others from the community may nominate students for consideration for the program by completing a nomination form in the elementary or junior high office.

The gifted program is designed to meet the needs of students who perform at a remarkably high level of accomplishment compared to others their age and need more complex instruction.

Funeral homes offer free emergency app

Davis-Morris and Riley Funeral Homes have invested back into their communities in order to promote the saving of lives.

They recognized a unique opportunity to assist local first responders through a marketing initiative that could help save lives.

The funeral homes ask that residents download the Vital ICE (In Case of Emergency) app, from the Apple App Store or Google Play, for smart phone and enter in their code: #3117 for Riley Funeral Home or #2288 for the Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

EDC gets Thompson building

Hamilton Economic Development Corporation has announced its partnership with the Thompson Charitable Foundation to acquire the property known as the “old Levels building” along with the downtown parking lot for a Downtown Plaza Development project.

As a part of this partnership, the Thompson Charitable Foundation donated $150,000 to be used toward the downtown plaza development, which will ensure the preservation of downtown Hamilton’s function and unique character by creating a community space for residents of all ages to enjoy.

Citywide garage sale deadline this Friday

The deadline to sign up for the annual Citywide Garage Sale is this Friday, April 5.

The garage sale will be April 12-13, and a large map of locations will be included in next week’s edition of the Herald-News.

Copies also will be placed in local convenience stores.

Council OKs application for Main Street program

Hamilton City Council and Hamilton Economic Development Board of Directors held a joint meeting last Thursday to discuss becoming a Designated Texas Main Street Community through the Texas Historical Commission in Austin. The council approved moving the application forward and supporting the program.

Monk March Saturday

The Monk March, a race to benefit cancer patient Justin Monk, is set for this Saturday, April 6, and will begin at the Hamilton Wellness Center, 400 N. Brown, at 7:30 a.m.

Monk, a nurse at Hamilton General Hospital and a Marine veteran who served in Afghanistan, has brain and spinal cord tumors. He and wife Monica have four children.

Funds raised from the race will be used for hospital, travel and household expenses during his treatments.

Fair Park gets new look to welcome visitors

Learning by doing

Thanks to several public and private sector organizations and volunteers who are similarly committed to improving the appearance of our community, Hamilton Fair Park has a new look to welcome visitors to the complex.

Keep Hamilton Beautiful organized the project as a station for Natural Resource Day, which is hosted each year by the Hamilton County AgriLife Extension Service for Hamilton and Hico ISD fifth and sixth graders.

Books and Butt April 12

Friends of the Library and Wenzel’s LoneStar Meat Co. will host Books & Butt on April 12 at the Hamilton Public Library.

The annual event serves Wenzel’s LoneStar Meat Co.’s famous “Bite My Butt” pork butt sandwiches alongside a book sale on the library lawn.

Browse the book sale from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m and is $8 per plate. For carry-out and deliveries, call 386-3474.

Trash Bash spring cleaning April 13

April 13 is spring cleaning time in Hamilton with three opportunities to part with unwanted items: Trash Bash, Don’t Mess with Texas® Trash-Off and the City-Wide Garage Sale.

Keep Hamilton Beautiful is hosting their second annual Trash Bash. Junk, tires and household waste can be dropped off at Fair Park from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., or until the bins are full. Please bring proof of residency.

West Bound Bluegrass plays at Pearl Saturday

West Bound Bluegrass from Abilene will be the featured showcase at the next free Pearl Bluegrass first Saturday Jam and Stage Show at the historic Community Center this Saturday, April 6. All the bluegrass jammers love to see West Bound Bluegrass arrive because everyone knows the picking is going to be non-stop, lively and fun.

Bill Black and sons Rob and David are happy to carry on their family’s musical tradition. Bill’s great-grandfather played the fiddle, and both of his grandfathers and two uncles played music as well.
