CARD OF THANKS

Many thanks to Dr. Lee and the nurses and staff at Focused Care. They were outstanding during the past year and a half dealing with COVID-19 and the quarantine while taking care of Ted. Solaris Hospice personnel were a big help and comfort also. A special thanks to Dr. Jerry Zschiesche for doing a great job grooming the grounds at the cemetery.

Young aviator lands in Alaska

Hamilton High School’s Caleb French, recipient of a $10,000 Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association grant scholarship, has already begun putting that scholarship to work.

On vacation in Fairbanks, Alaska, Caleb discovered a flight school with a Cub on floats and was able to fly it.

“It was amazing!” Caleb told local instructor Charles Lackey. “It was really weird having the floats on it while flying, I had to use a whole lot more rudder, and it kind of lagged behind. Otherwise, it was really just a normal Cub.

Crawdads & campfires

When St. John Lutheran youth teens started thinking of an outreach activity for the community, they immediately brainstormed, crawdads and campfires.

Several of the youth are members of the Hamilton County 4-H group so they reached out to the Texas Agrilife Extension office asking if they could have a joint night to teach area children.

With permission from the City Administrator Ryan Polster, they hosted a Kids Camp Night in Schadler Meadow June 8.

Kids built, then taught about 5 different campfires: teepee, lean-to, log cabin, cross and charcoal.

Going up?

Hamilton City Council last Thursday approved a hike in water rates, approved renewal of the Fair Park agreement and approved appointment of Hamilton Economic Development Board members.

The council also chose a mayor pro tem, amended the 2020 budget and appointed an alternate representative to the Central Texas Council on Governments.

Earlier this year, the city engaged NewGen Strategies & Solutions to conduct a retail water and wastewater rate study to take into account the revenue requirement from this year through FY 2026.

Evant seeks 2 for board

Evant School students may be out for the summer, but the school board will be working overtime at least until fall.

With the resignations of Superintendent Ken Wimberley and two school board members, the trustees have some big decisions to make.

The board considered Wimberley’s resignation in closed session Monday.

And board members Mary Ann Davison and Shelly O’Briant-Janisch recently moved just outside district lines and resigned from the board.

Hamilton Herald-News brought home eight awards from last weekend’s Texas Press Association convention.

HHN won in Special Sections for its annual visitors guide and Magazine for its quarterly Thrive magazine.

The paper also placed second in advertising and photography; third in features and headlines; and fourth in sweepstakes and column writing.
