Maggie Davis
Maggie Mae (Wood) Davis, 89, passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2021. Services were Tuesday, Oct. 19, in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Maggie was born at home in Hamilton to Lonnie and Sallie (Allen) Wood on Oct. 21, 1931. She was the youngest of their five children, which included Walteen, Leo, Mary, Adeline and Allen.
She enjoyed riding with her dad in his dump truck and going fishing with him. She also helped her mom with canning and cooking for boarders. She attended school in Hamilton, Amarillo and Aleman, where her father owned a general store that sold everything from flour, beans and cornmeal to tools and hardware. Maggie and her brothers iced the cold drinks.
She loved to play basketball and was the salutatorian of the class of 1951 from Aleman School.
She moved back to Hamilton to work at the telephone office as one of the switchboard operators for Mrs. Hatfield, who provided rental housing for the women. She and her friends could work, sleep and walk to see movies or mail a letter all in the same block.
Maggie met the love of her life when Eugene Davis and his parents came through Hamilton on their way to visit family. They were married at Reagan Street Church of Christ on April 2, 1952. They drove to California and enjoyed Sequoia National Forest and the snow. Their first daughter Eugenia Ann was born in Fresno. Their second daughter Cynthia Kay was born in Fort Worth when they moved back to Texas. They moved to Midland for a postal job, and they transferred to Hamilton when Maggie’s mother needed help.
Mom was a people person, and she never met a stranger. She worked at City Drug for 10 years and enjoyed meeting and helping people find what they needed. She enjoyed working with Dot Taylor, Mollie Dalton and Jewel Morgan.
She loved her family and enjoyed cooking from her mother’s recipes. She made the best turkey and dressing for Thanksgiving. She loved to cook Italian food especially spaghetti and meatballs.
She loved her granddaughters and great-grandchildren, and they loved her! She was their Mawmaw and their GeeGee who would do anything for them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, our Dad, her siblings and their spouses Walteen (J.F) Sellers, Leo (Nellie) Wood, Mary Adeline Sipes and Allen (Adelle) Wood.
