Winters Fox

Joe “Winters” Fox, 78, of Hamilton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan 10, at 2 p.m. at Riley Funeral Home.

Winters was born in San Antonio on Oct. 19, 1942, to Joe H Fox Jr. and Bettye Jo “Miller” Jones.

He graduated from Lampasas High School in 1961. He was very active in FFA where he won the DeKalb award in 1961. He had Reserve Champion Shorthorn at Houston Livestock Show in 1960 and Grand Champion Shorthorn at the Heart of Texas Fair in 1961.

Winters married Nancy Talbot on March 7, 1986.

He was a rancher for David Winters (Winters Ranch) for 30-plus years. Later in life, he was a truck driver and cattle buyer for many years.

Winters enjoyed cooking a good “chuck wagon” meal and participating in cookoffs. He loved to read western books, specifically all the Louis L’Amour. He grew the best tomatoes and grilled a top-notch steak. He loved to go to Ruidoso where he caught the “racehorse” bug. Winters loved to spend time at the races and being in the mountains.

He loved spending time with his grandkids.

He had a keen eye for picking a good show pig. Some said he had the secret for feeding them out to perfection.

In his later years of life, he would sit out in the barn with Shea Wilson, admiring all their show pigs. When you stopped by Winters’ place, you never left hungry, and he always offered to make you one of his “famous” drinks, even up to his last days.

Winters was preceded in death by his parents; his sons Jeff and Dewayne Fox and David Farmer; and by a great-grandson, River Bullard.

Winters is survived by his wife Nancy Fox of Hamilton; daughter Jennifer Craig and husband Chris of Hamilton; son Logan Fox and wife Kara of Seymour, Denise May and husband Donovon Tallent of Pearland and Rusty Williams and wife Pam of Dublin; grandkids Kendra Schmidt and husband Tyler of Hamilton, Blain Parrish and fiancé Brandi Pancake of Hamilton, Sarah Sawyer and husband Bryce of Seymour, Landon Tallent and wife Renee of Ventura, California, Brandi Batson and husband Michael of Hamilton, Travis Tallent of Austin, Hunter Williams of Bryson, Acy May of Hamilton, Haley Wiles and husband Nick of Seymour, Jarred Farmer of Austin, Morgan Janisch and husband Josh of Longview, McKenna May of Pearland, Chelsea Williams of Stephenville and Slade Fox and fiancé Kaleigh Clevenger of Lubbock; two brothers, Mike Fox and wife Kay of Lampasas and Rex Jones and wife Ann of Bronte; three sisters, Tammy Fox Pollock of Bryan, Sandy Holloman and husband Bo of Lampasas and Judy Bays of San Antonio; 14 great-grandkids, whom he loved dearly; several nieces and nephews; and a host of close friends and family.
