Elizabeth Ilene West, 58, of Pottsville went to be with our blessed Lord on the night of Feb. 5, 2017.

Ilene was born April 5, 1958, in Levelland, Hockley County, to Ray and Ladois Sides West. Born with Down Syndrome, her doctor did not think she would live into adulthood.
The family moved near Carlton in 1960 for a better environment for Ilene. She started school in Carlton but when it closed, she transferred to the school in Stephenville. When the family moved to Pottsville in 1973, she started school at Hamilton.
She was part of the first class of five students in Special Education under Freddie Taylor. Under Ilene's beloved Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Sue Weeks, she learned daily activities that she would use for the rest of her life. She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1979.
For several years she worked in the MHMR Sheltered Workshop in Brownwood. She became very active in the Special Olympics while working at the workshop. She competed in basketball, bowling and track. She even got her family and some extended family involved in helping with the Special Olympics in Brownwood.
Born with a sweet and gentle disposition, Ilene touched everyone she met. She never met a person she did not like. Once known to her, she would always meet you with a smile and hug, even if she called you by the wrong name. She enjoyed food, music, movies, games, books, singing and dancing. She was a die-hard Elvis Presley fan, enjoying his music, movies and anything Elvis.
