When Emma Lou McPherson celebrates her 90th birthday Saturday with a couple hundred of her closest friends, she doesn’t want any gifts.

For her, the gifts are the people.

Born in Pottsville July 9, 1928, Lou was always into sports. With two brothers and a sister, there was always a basketball or baseball game going on. Her friends and family called her “Lefty.”

She played basketball, baseball, volleyball and tennis at Pottsville High School and graduated in 1945.

She says her greatest accomplishment was working 40 years from Hamilton National Bank, where she rose from the position of teller at age 20 to senior vice president upon her retirement.

“I met lots of people at the bank,” she said. “The James family were good people to work for.”
