The Special Care Clinic at Hamilton Healthcare System has added play therapy to its clinic and counseling services.

“The addition of the new play therapy room demonstrates Hamilton Healthcare System’s strong commitment to providing patient-centered care and to better serve the mental health needs of our communities,” said Cathy Kolodziej, Licensed Professional Counselor and Director of the Special Care Clinic.

Play therapy helps children and families express their emotions, improve their communication and solve problems. It capitalizes on children’s natural ability to express their feelings and resolve conflicts through play.

Therapists use various media, including storytelling, puppet play, drama, music, dance, sand play, painting and drawing and board games.

Individual play therapy focuses on healing and strengthening children. Through the play as well as the special therapeutic relationship, the therapist helps the child to accept his or her emotions, develop trust and confidence and improve behavior.

Play is a natural medium for children and families to express feelings, solve problems and build skills. Children’s play can uncover their internal conflicts, bring to light negative communication patterns in families and help children and families discover new problem-solving techniques and strategies.

Play therapy can ameliorate the effects of trauma and loss, reduce anxiety and depression, improve children’s behavior and help children manage social and academic difficulties.

Play therapy is one of the most validated forms of therapy for children and families. Some studies indicate that play therapy can exert positive effects for several years after treatment.

The SCC has expanded its counseling services. In addition to quality group and individual counseling for the senior adult population, it now offers comprehensive and effective individual counseling for adolescents, adults and families.
