Ninety members of the Hamilton Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America attended the Region III Conference in Waco Feb. 9-10, and 42 will be advancing to state competition.

Chapter members were among 1000 delegates attending the two-day conference. The youth developed the theme “FCCLA: Construction Leaders.”

FCCLA trains leaders across the state Texas to build strong communities that focus on families and careers. The meeting featured a series of specialized leadership tracks and general sessions in which members discovered ways to become involved in issues facing today’s youth.

STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) and Proficiency Events are competitive events in which members participate at the region meeting to showcase their life skills in different areas of competition.

FCCLA is a dynamic youth organization that has the family as its central focus. Student leaders of Texas FCCLA began their journey of “FCCLA: Constructing Leaders” and progress with programs related to Architecture and Construction, Arts, A/V Technology and Communication, Education and Training, Hospitality and Tourism and Human Services.

The Texas Association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America sponsors STAR events and proficiency events for FCCLA chapter members in the state. Participation in these events provides opportunities for members to develop specific lifetime skills in character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge and career preparation. They are an integral part of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education curriculum within the local school system.

The competitive events are designed as learning experiences to enhance students’ self-concepts, demonstrate students' abilities, provide another means of meeting FCCLA members' needs, increase participation in family and consumer sciences and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, enhance the image of the organization and the family and consumer sciences profession, and prepare students to take their place in today’s society.

The state leadership meeting will be held in Dallas April 4-7.
