Hamilton High School’s Band Boosters will have their 14th annual state-sanctioned barbecue cookoff this weekend Aug. 11-12, at Fair Park.

Proceeds from the event will help the band attend the many contests and trips for the school year.

“They have represented our city and state on a national level, but moving them from one place to another is not cheap,” said band director Asa Hamilton. “The finances required are large, and they depend on this cookoff for a large portion of the necessary funds.”

The cookoff is sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society, which is also the sanctioning body of the National Championship Barbecue Cookoff in Meridian. Winners of the Hamilton cookoff automatically qualify for the national finals.

Entries in the local cookoff from previous years have included a national champion and many other well known cookers from around the state.

“Our goal is to provide our Hamilton students with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives,” Hamilton said. “This is such a unique opportunity for our students and we appreciate the community’s support.”
